Intent

At West Kirby Primary School we aim to enable our pupils to be healthy, ecologically aware, global citizens of the future. We aspire to provide an inspiring English curriculum that equips our children to successfully develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, spelling and grammar. Our English curriculum is  delivered through high-quality teaching, thought-provoking learning environments and cross-curricular opportunities. Teachers use assessment strategies to adapt planning to fit the needs of their class and help every child succeed. We ensure that reading is fully integrated across the whole curriculum with pupils being given as many opportunities to read as possible. Support is available to develop pupil’s reading for pleasure outside of our school environment.

Implementation

These aims are embedded across our English lessons and the wider curriculum. In English, this can be seen by the way we select our class novels to plan stimulating lessons and to enable all children to experience rich texts. Where appropriate, we match books to our topics to provide cross-curricular writing opportunities. Our focus is to develop our children’s understanding of the world around them and provide them with books that can act as “mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors”. By doing this, each phase is ensuring that high, quality texts are chosen with the purpose to both engage and inspire children to produce quality pieces of writing. First hand experiences provided in school also impact the quality of the children’s writing as they are able to write from experience. Our marking and feedback policy allows children to respond to feedback whilst offering opportunities to edit and evaluate the effectiveness of theirs and others’ work from early in KS1. Guided reading books are carefully sourced to either continue links with our topics or to develop children’s knowledge. When possible, we also invite outside providers into school to provide extra-curricular activities. Our learning mats and science glossaries continue to introduce new and unfamiliar vocabulary which teachers incorporate and investigate in lessons. Pupils are then encouraged to use this new vocabulary in their own written work. West Kirby Primary School is a reading school. We organise whole school enrichments, to celebrate events such as World Book Day and Roald Dahl Day and share stories across phases. This gives our children the opportunity to be inspired and share collaborative learning experiences with other classes and year groups. Our school librarian works closely with staff and children from Foundation Stage through to Year 6 to help promote reading for pleasure, often linking new, appealing texts to events and celebrations across the academic year including Black History Month, Diwali and Children’s Mental Health Week. By building strong relationships with the children, the librarian helps to extend reading choices and engage reluctant readers by offering book and author choices to suit every child’s interest. When able, we also invite outside providers into school to provide extra-curricular activities. Parents are informed of important milestones throughout their child’s education and how they can help to support. Every year group begins the Autumn Term with ‘Meet the Teacher’ meetings where parents are shown the Reading and Writing objectives that their child will need to secure by the end of the academic year. Parent meetings are also provided for Year 1 Phonics, Year 2 SATs (with a focus on Reading) and Year 6 SATs.

Impact

Evidence of the impact can be seen in our children's books, our new e-portfolios, our displays and the children's own opinions of their learning during pupil voice. Teachers set high standards for writing through quality-first teaching, which helps our children to develop confidence and pride through their own learning. Teacher judgements are internally moderated within each key phase and writing progression can be seen from F2 through to Year 6. In children’s books, there is a wide range of writing genres influenced by a range of engaging texts. Feedback from teaching staff, both written and verbal, has impact on our pupils. Often, with next step questions to push learning forward. Children are also becoming increasingly independent in their reading choices as they have been encouraged by class teachers and our school librarian to talk about the books they have read from the beginning of their school journey. We promote the importance of early reading and reading for pleasure to parents who have supported the school by donating generously to provide new books for every classroom. The English Lead shares information throughout the academic year with SLT and the Governing Body to share targets, progress and attainment via the termly Subject Leader Report and Action Plans.
