At West Kirby Primary School, we aim to enable pupils to be healthy, ecologically aware, global citizens of the future. Art and Design, enables pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think, through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. They will also learn about the range of famous artists describing the differences and similarities between different practices and make links to their work. This can be seen by the way we choose a range of art activities matched to the topics we are looking to teach each term.
In Art and Design, this can be seen in the way that all key phases study using a range of media and textiles. From Early years, pupils are given opportunity to explore colour, texture, shape, pattern and they are also encouraged to develop their own creative ideas through play. From Key Stage 1 to 2, pupils are encouraged to expand their creativity using a variety of media and techniques provided. They are also given an opportunity to study famous artists, making links to their own work. The skills they develop throughout the art curriculum are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.
Art is also displayed to motivate and inspire others and to celebrate the children’s artwork around school such as classrooms, corridors, and hall. We also record evidence through photographs in class big books and the pupil's sketchbooks.
Art and Design will show an impact from the evidence in our pupil's sketchbooks, our displays and the pupil's own opinions of their learning (pupil voice). Pupils will develop skills to enable them to become confident to evaluate their own learning and speak confidently to others about their own work.
