Who was Prince Philip?

9th April 2021
What’s going on?
The Royal Family announced with 'deep sorrow' the death Prince Philip at the age of 99. The Queen has referred to Philip as her 'strength and guide' throughout their 73-year marriage and her 69-year reign. The Duke of Edinburgh spent his final days at Windsor Castle with his wife, after a 28-night stay in hospital having been admitted in mid-February for an infection. Her Majesty announced her husband's death at midday as the Union Flag was lowered to half-mast outside Buckingham Palace and on public buildings across the UK and Commonwealth. The Royal Family said in a statement, 'It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.’

Watch the useful video (link below) which is a tribute to Prince Philip, can you recall an interesting fact to share with others?
Read through the information found on the resource about the life of Prince Philip. What do you think is his greatest achievement? What do you think will he be remembered for the most?
It is thought that Prince Philip had a good sense of humour and was often quoted making jokes. During one exchange with a reporter at the airport he was asked how his flight went, he replied with ‘have you ever been in an aircraft?’, ‘of course’, with Prince Philip adding, ‘well it was a bit like that!’. How important do you think it is to have a good sense of humour? Do you think it would have been important in his role?
On the resource is a quote from the Queen, “During these years as your Queen, the support of my family has, across the generations, been beyond measure. Prince Philip is, I believe, well-known for declining compliments of any kind. But throughout he has been a constant strength and guide. He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.” What do you think the Queen meant by the words above and what do you think it tells us about Prince Philip’s character?

Reflection
Prince Philip lived a long and extraordinary life. He will be fondly remembered by many for his loyal service and as an integral part of the Royal Family.
