Intent - Implementation - Impact

“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”

Intent

At West Kirby Primary School, we aim to enable our pupils to be healthy, ecologically aware, global citizens of the future.

As a school, it is our aim to instil a love of History in all our children. We work hard to provide an interesting and varied curriculum that interests and intrigues our children while meeting the needs of all backgrounds, cultures and abilities. From EYFS up to the end of KS2, the children will be taught about various historical events and famous historical figures, some of which have shaped the world today.  We create every opportunity to link History to other subjects. Staff follow their curriculum maps to ensure progression throughout the school.

Implementation

As a staff, we maintain strong links to the National Curriculum guidelines to ensure all aspects, knowledge and skills of History are being taught across all year groups. All staff use assessment for learning to ensure all lessons are relevant and will help to plan for next steps. Through our teaching, historical artefacts and visits, will excite and intrigue our children to find out more about events and people from the past. We develop deep subject knowledge and key skills while adapting work for all abilities. We have an on-going monitoring system that helps staff ensure that all topics and skills are being taught in relevant year groups.

Our topics each half term have a Humanities link. The History or Geography focus is at the core of what we teach and when possible, other areas of the curriculum are linked to the Geography and History topic. Each phase ensures good quality texts linked to the topic that will engage and inspire the children to produce quality writing, are chosen.  Guided reading books are chosen to link to topic too and the Learning mats have vocabulary which all teachers are investigating with the children and they are being encouraged to use this new vocabulary in their written work. Class displays linked to the topic, show the vocabulary we expect the children to be using, support the children in their learning. School visits are carefully selected and are usually linked to the Geography and History topic. These experiences give the children the opportunity to be fully engaged and have a hands-on experience to bring their learning to life

Impact

Children enjoy History lessons and look forward to finding out more. The children are encouraged to research independently to further their own enjoyment and fascination about the topic or subject. Evidence of work will show a range of topics covered, cross curriculum links and differentiated work. Standards in History will be high and will align with other subjects such as English. Teacher judgments are discussed and moderated. All stakeholders are kept informed through feedback from moderations, subject reports and annual subject action plans.

Evidence of the impact of this is in our children's books, our e-portfolios, our displays and the children's own opinions of their learning (pupil voice).
