School Info

West Kirby Primary School was originally opened in 1908. It is a community primary coeducational day school having approx 260 children in the main school, plus a 26-place nursery class. There are 9 full-time teachers, 3 part time teachers, a headteacher, a nursery nurse and six teaching assistants.

We are proud to be the holders of the Basic Skills Quality Mark which recognises the quality of our work in the teaching of literacy and numeracy and we are a health promoting school. We have been re-awarded Investors in People status, a School Achievement Award for excellence, and an Activemark for our sports provision and named Health Promoting School 2007.

We were named in the OFSTED Chief Inspectors Report for 2003 as a very successful school and again in 2006. For further details on the latest Ofsted reports, visit the Ofted Reports section on this website.

All About Our School

Although our school was built nearly a century ago, it was extensively extended and modernised in 1990 and 1999, and we now have had a further extension to increase the size of our nursery and provide four classrooms to replace some old temporary buildings.

We have a spacious hall that is used for a variety of activities including assembly, dance and drama, gymnastics, and dining at lunchtime, plus a library, a cookery area and our internet-linked computer suite that is used by all our pupils.

Not all our work takes place in the classroom. We have recently installed a canopy for the Foundation Stage, which promotes a classroom outside. There are garden areas in our playgrounds providing a place for children to sit quietly at playtime and which also provide a valuable resource for work in science and environmental studies. The playgrounds themselves have been extensively remodelled to stimulate a range of play activities. Moreover, children frequently develop and extend their work by making visits outside the school, both in the immediate locality of West Kirby and to museums, galleries and places of interest further afield, and we are visited each year by musicians and by a theatre group.

We have strong links with the local community and display work in the library and other public areas, besides inviting representatives from local firms and other members of the community to come and work in school with children when it is appropriate. At Christmas, our children sing in one of the local churches and entertain pensioners from West Kirby.

We also like to emphasise the importance of caring for others, and the children raise considerable sums for charity each year. We have established a School Council on which all classes from year 2 upwards are represented, so that our children can have a real say in the running of their school. Children complete a questionnaire each year to show us their view about their school and how it can be improved.
